Municipal Wastewater Biosolids
Biosolids is the product created by
treatment of sewage solids in Municipal Waste Water Treatment Plants.
The thickened sludge is pumped to a belt press where it is dewatered to
13%-20% solids, which in most instances is Class B Biosolids in
accordance with 40 CFR Part
503. The Tempest processes the Class B biosolid into a Class A
material in one operation, processing from 1 to 5 wet tons per hour,
depending on the material characteristics. Class A material meets all
the requirements of 40 CFR Part 503 for Pathogen Reduction and Vector
Attractions as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Vector attraction reduction results in the mitigation of the attraction to the biosolids by rodents, flies and other vermin. The Class A material is now safe to land apply without any restrictions, and is actually a high quality organic fertilizer. There is a wide variety of applications for Class A material including use on golf courses, lawns, crops, citrus groves and on sod farms, as well as a soil amendment.
During the Tempest process, the Class B biosolids undergoes a 4 to 1 weight reduction through the cyclonic drying process, removing the requisite moisture and reducing not only weight, but also volume. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulation 40 CFR Part 503 provides the guidelines for acceptable municipal biosolids processing.
